Shetland wedding photography: a journey north
It’s no secret that we love Scotland.
Throughout 2019 we’ve had the pleasure of working in some truly stunning locations. From Rachel and Jonny’s lochside love story in the Trossachs to Sue and Alfie’s beautiful big day in Glasgow, we feel so lucky to have been booked to capture so many weddings up north.
Earlier this year our love for Scotland reached new heights when we were asked to capture Hazel and Keir’s wedding in Lerwick - with the big day booked for September 21 at the town’s historic Shetland Museum and Archives.
Our adventure began at 19:00 on September 18 with our ferry leaving a misty Aberdeen. A few hours later (12, to be exact), we arrived at Lerwick before heading to our quaint accommodation in Scalloway, located in the southern part of the mainland.
That same day with our bags unpacked and our cameras charged, Helen and I set out to meet the bride and groom to be for an engagement shoot that proved to be like no other. With two stunning locations scouted for the shoot, we were blown away by what we found.
Between arriving and the wedding day itself, Hels and I allowed a couple of days to explore Shetland further. During this time we visited St Ninian’s Isle, plus a number of white, sandy beaches along Shetland’s rugged coastline.
Not one to miss out on a wild swim, my wetsuit proved useful as the sun set on our second full day on the island. By this time we were fully engaged with the slow pace of life offered on these remote shores - complete with its howling winds and icy blue waters.
On the day of the wedding, Helen and I awoke early to capture both bridal and groom prep - with both taking place in the same town, albeit a short drive from one another.
From the first few shots we knew that Hazel and Keir’s big day would be one to remember. Not only were we blessed with clear breaks in the weather and some of the most stunning scenery we could ever wish to capture, Hazel and Keir themselves made the day so, so easy - along with all their friends and family, who made us feel as though we too were locals.
Below are some of our favourite shots from throughout the day, with the majority of shots taken at the Shetland Museum and Archives, Lerwick Town Hall and a coastal retreat a few miles from Lerwick town centre.
